When CHESPAX designed this project it was with the goal of using technology for the observation of the Osprey in its natural habitat. The observations and data to be collected from this project, in years past would have been an arduous task at best, and likely not even possible. The findings of this project will support and reinforce lessons learned in the classroom about food webs, food chains, energy transfer and matter transfer. When the seventh graders make their observations and reports in the spring, they will reflect back their field experience at Kings Landing Park that included a fish capture activity. The observed osprey nest is in close proximity to the site where the students collected their fish data and it is probable that the type of fish the students captured will be represented in the osprey's daily fish catch. By identifying what fish the osprey are bringing to their nest will further reinforce the knowledge that all systems are connected.
relevant nesting facts & feeding habits
- The average time they spend hunting before making a catch is about 12 minutes.
- Captured fish usually measure about 6–13 inches in length and weigh one-third to two-thirds of a pound
- Ospreys catch fish three or four times a day, more often when feeding their young.
- The chicks are usually fed very early in the morning, around midday and in the evening.
- Osprey eggs do not hatch all at once. Rather, the first chick emerges up to five days before the last one.
- Osprey nesting habitat must include an adequate supply of accessible fish within a maximum of about 12 miles of the nest
- Clutch Size:1–4 eggs Number of Broods: 1 Incubation Period: 36–42 days Nestling Period: 50–55 days
